Red light therapy is one of the few wellness categories where the specifications actually mean something, and one of the few where most brands decline to publish them.

Two numbers determine whether a panel does anything: the wavelengths it emits, and how much light energy reaches your skin at a working distance. A panel that omits the second figure is asking you to buy on faith. Hooga publishes both, which is the most useful thing about the brand before you get anywhere near a model name.

The lineup splits into three panel series built on different LED architectures, plus a specialist sauna panel and a range of wearables. Which series you want depends less on budget than on whether you care about features you will actually use. This guide works through the difference.

Where we stand: Elite Sauna Direct is not an authorized Hooga dealer and we do not sell their devices. We cover sauna and wellness equipment, buyers ask us about brands we do not carry, and an outside read is more useful than another listing. Figures below come from Hooga published specifications and major retailer listings. This is not medical advice.

The Specifications, Before the Model Names

Three concepts, and once you have them the lineup organizes itself.

Wavelengths

Every Hooga panel emits 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared. These are the two most heavily researched wavelengths in photobiomodulation, which is why nearly every serious panel on the market uses them. Red at 660nm is absorbed close to the surface; near-infrared at 850nm is invisible to the eye and penetrates further.

The ULTRA series adds two more, 630nm and 810nm, for a four-wavelength spectrum. Whether the extra two matter to you is a genuine question rather than a marketing one. The research base behind 630 and 810 is thinner than behind 660 and 850. More wavelengths is not automatically better, it is broader.

Irradiance, and the distance problem

Irradiance is the power density arriving at your skin, expressed in milliwatts per square centimetre. Hooga lists the HG1000 at over 95 mW/cm2 and the PRO4500 at 192 mW/cm2.

Here is the part that trips people up: irradiance is meaningless without a stated distance. Light intensity falls off sharply as you move away from the source, so a figure measured at 3 inches and a figure measured at 12 inches describe wildly different experiences. When comparing any two panels, from any brands, confirm the measurement distance or you are comparing nothing.

Higher irradiance mainly buys you shorter sessions. Hooga states the HG1000 delivers effective sessions in under 10 minutes. A lower-output panel is not useless, it just requires you to stand there longer, and session length is the variable that determines whether a device gets used daily or abandoned by week three.

Single, dual, and quad chip

This is the actual architecture difference between the three series.

HG series uses single-chip 5W LEDs. The HG1000 carries 200 of them. Proven, simple, and the cheapest way to a real panel.

PRO series uses dual-chip LEDs, roughly doubling output per diode. The PRO750 carries 150 of them; the PRO4500 carries 900.

ULTRA series uses quad-chip LEDs, which is how it fits four wavelengths into one diode. The ULTRA750 carries 150.

More chips per LED means more output from the same panel area, which is why the PRO and ULTRA panels hit higher irradiance figures without becoming physically enormous.

The Three Panel Series

HG series, and the HG1000

The value line, starting around 149 dollars for the smallest panels. The HG1000 is the full-body model most people in this series end up with.

Specifications: 200 single-chip 5W LEDs, 660nm and 850nm, irradiance stated well above 95 mW/cm2, sessions under 10 minutes, roughly 35.8 by 8.2 inches. It ships with door-hanging hardware, built-in cooling fans, a timer, and a carrying handle, backed by a 3-year warranty.

The door-hang detail is more practical than it sounds. It means no stand purchase and no wall drilling, which for an apartment or a rented space is often the difference between a panel that gets installed and one that stays in the box.

What you give up: no brightness control, no pulse mode, no separate red and near-infrared selection. It is on or off.

PRO series, and the PRO4500

The output line. Dual-chip LEDs, higher irradiance, and the series aimed at people who want genuine full-body coverage.

The PRO1500 is the flagship single panel at roughly 1,199 dollars, listed at 189 mW/cm2 across a 36-inch panel, which delivers full-body coverage from one unit. The PRO4500 at around 3,099 dollars is a multi-panel bundle: 900 dual-chip LEDs, 192 mW/cm2, measuring about 61.2 by 15.7 inches, with a digital timer and a modular design.

Understand what you are buying with the PRO4500. It is a configured full-body setup rather than a single device, and the price reflects a system. If you want maximum coverage and maximum output and you are not interested in feature complexity, this is the series.

ULTRA series, and the ULTRA750

The feature line, and the most interesting one technically.

The ULTRA750 runs about 799 dollars with 150 quad-chip LEDs emitting 630, 660, 810, and 850nm. It adds:

  • Independent brightness control from 1 to 100 percent for red and near-infrared separately
  • An adjustable timer from 1 to 30 minutes
  • Pulse frequency control from 1Hz to 9999Hz
  • A digital touchscreen with slider controls
  • Selection between red only, near-infrared only, or both
  • Modular connection to other ULTRA panels on mobile stands, or standalone with the included hanging kit

The entry ULTRA360 at around 419 dollars carries the same feature set with 72 quad-chip LEDs, and notably undercuts comparable PRO panels while offering more control. The ULTRA1500 at roughly 1,399 dollars scales the treatment area up.

Our honest read on pulse mode: the evidence that pulsed light outperforms continuous light is unsettled. If pulse frequency control is the reason you are considering the ULTRA series, that is a thin reason. If the brightness control, wavelength selection, and touchscreen are the reason, those are real and you will use them.

SaunaPRO: The Specialist

The SaunaPRO is a red light panel engineered specifically for installation inside a sauna, rated for high heat and high humidity, listed around 1,199 dollars.

This matters more than it might appear. A standard LED panel is not built for a 180F, high-humidity environment. Electronics, drivers, and adhesives all degrade under those conditions, and putting a regular panel in a sauna is a reliable way to void a warranty and shorten a device's life.

If you already have a sauna and want light therapy in the same space, this is the only model in the lineup designed for it. If you do not have a sauna, it offers you nothing a standard panel does not, at a higher price.

The Wearables

Panels treat large areas at a distance. Wearables put the light in contact with one specific area, hands-free. Different tool, different job.

Belt

A flexible wrap for the back or abdomen. Hooga also offers a version combining red light with PEMF, starting around 249 dollars.

The practical appeal is contact. A belt sits directly against skin, which removes the distance problem entirely, and it leaves your hands free. The limitation is coverage: you are treating a band, not a body.

Hat and helmet

Two distinct products for scalp coverage. The hat is a soft, hands-free option for red and near-infrared illumination. The helmet is a rigid device that a retailer lists as using 650nm with 96 Class II lasers, around 499 dollars.

Worth noting: Hooga's own current product language describes these as supporting scalp and hair care routines, while some third-party retailer listings still use much stronger wording. We would go with the manufacturer's more measured framing, and read anything stronger with caution.

Face mask

A flexible silicone mask with an adjustable strap, using 64 dual-chip LEDs at 660nm and 850nm. Contoured contact with the face and hands-free operation are the whole point.

Acupressure mat

A combination device: LED light, acupressure-style spikes, and optional heat. Three modalities in one product, which is either efficient or unfocused depending on your view. If you already use an acupressure mat, adding light costs you nothing in routine time. If you do not, this is a lot of concepts in one purchase.

A Word on What These Devices Do

This category has a claims problem, and it is worth being direct about it.

The mechanism is real: red and near-infrared light is absorbed by mitochondria and influences cellular energy production. Evidence is reasonably established for skin appearance and for aspects of muscle recovery and localized pain. Evidence for the longer list of benefits that circulates in this category is considerably thinner, and much of the marketing across the entire industry outruns it.

Hooga's own current language is noticeably careful, describing devices as used within skincare routines, recovery routines, scalp care routines, and evening wind-down routines. That hedged phrasing is more accurate than the confident claims found on some third-party listings of the same products, and we would take the manufacturer's caution as the honest signal.

Practical safety notes worth having: eye protection is recommended, particularly with high-output panels at close range, and mild eye strain or temporary skin warmth are the commonly reported effects. If you take photosensitizing medication, have a skin condition, or are pregnant, talk to a physician before starting.

How to Choose

First panel, testing the concept. HG series. The HG1000 gives full-body-scale coverage with door-hang installation and no feature learning curve.

You want maximum coverage and shortest sessions. PRO series. The PRO1500 as a single panel, or the PRO4500 bundle for a built-out setup.

You want control over intensity and wavelength. ULTRA series. Start with the ULTRA360 unless treatment area is the constraint, in which case the ULTRA750 or ULTRA1500.

You have a sauna. SaunaPRO, and only SaunaPRO.

You are treating one specific area. A wearable is a better tool than a panel. Belt for back or abdomen, mask for face, hat or helmet for scalp.

You want to start small and expand. PRO and ULTRA panels are modular and connect on mobile stands. HG panels are not. If a phased build is the plan, that decides the series for you.

Trial, Warranty, and HSA/FSA

Every full-size Hooga panel ships with a 60-day in-home trial and a 3-year warranty. For a category where the honest answer to whether it works for you is that it depends, a two-month trial window is genuinely the right structure and is more generous than much of the market offers.

Hooga products are also listed as HSA and FSA eligible. That mechanism typically requires a letter of medical necessity and does not apply to everyone, but where it does apply it changes the effective price. Confirm eligibility for your own circumstances rather than assuming.

Where Hooga Is Not the Answer

You want a clinical device. These are consumer wellness products. If you need a device cleared for a specific medical indication, that is a different purchase made through a different channel with a clinician involved.

You want a full-body panel for under a few hundred dollars. The entry HG panels are genuinely affordable but they are small. Real full-body coverage costs what it costs, in this brand and every other.

You want to put a standard panel in a sauna. Do not. Use the SaunaPRO or nothing.

You are buying on pulse mode alone. The evidence for pulsed over continuous output does not currently justify choosing a series on that basis.

Common Questions

What is the difference between the HG, PRO, and ULTRA series?
LED architecture. HG uses single-chip LEDs, PRO uses dual-chip for higher output, ULTRA uses quad-chip and adds two extra wavelengths plus brightness, pulse, and touchscreen controls.

What wavelengths do Hooga panels emit?
All panels emit 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared. ULTRA panels add 630nm and 810nm.

What is the irradiance of the HG1000?
Hooga states well over 95 mW/cm2 from 200 5W LEDs, with sessions under 10 minutes. Always confirm the measurement distance when comparing panels.

Is the PRO4500 one panel or several?
It is a multi-panel full-body configuration with 900 dual-chip LEDs at a stated 192 mW/cm2.

Can I use a regular panel in my sauna?
No. Standard panels are not rated for sauna heat and humidity. The SaunaPRO is the model built for it.

Do the panels connect together?
PRO and ULTRA panels are modular and mount on mobile stands. HG panels are not modular.

Is there a trial period?
Full-size panels ship with a 60-day in-home trial and a 3-year warranty.

Panel or wearable?
Panels cover large areas at a distance. Wearables give direct contact on one area, hands-free. If you are treating one joint or your face, a wearable is the better tool.

Does Elite Sauna Direct sell Hooga?
Not at present. We are not an authorized Hooga dealer. This guide is editorial. To buy, go to Hooga or an authorized retailer.

Choosing a Red Light Panel?

The decision in this category comes down to three things: how much of your body you want covered, how long you are willing to stand there, and whether you will actually use adjustable settings or just want an on switch. Most people overestimate the third and underestimate the second.

We track demand across red light and sauna brands, including this one. If you are weighing a Hooga panel against another brand, or trying to work out whether a panel or a wearable suits what you are doing, tell us the area you want covered and the space you have. We will give you a straight read, and let you know if our availability changes.

If you have decided, buy direct from Hooga or an authorized retailer. Faster for you, and we would rather say so.
